Young & Free
There is a new generation of girls in Ethiopia – they are young, free and running.
The annual Women First 5km run was started in May 2004 in lieu with Women’s Day to recognize the achievements of Ethiopia’s great female athletes and to support the broader changes regarding the role of women in Ethiopia’s economic and social life. Now these races have taken a new lease of life.
In a society that is very strict about women showing skin, eating on streets or laughing out loud, you’ll find these girls breaking the rules without a care in the world. For these girls, the race is definitely much more than a “race”. Through the years, it has become a way of self expression, self affirmation and a confidence boost. At these races, every one is equal and their possibilities are endless.
